Audi’s New Four-Cylinder Race Engine Has A Ridiculous 610 HP

Don’t expect it on a road car, though.

Beginning this year, DTM Class 1 race cars are under stringent engine requirements. Regulations now require more modern, more efficient turbocharged engines, with each car limited to approximately 25 gallons (95 kilograms) of fuel per hour. But new requirements don’t phase Audi engineers, apparently; the team’s new turbocharged 2.0-liter engine produces a whopping 610 horsepower (454 kilowatts).

Development of the new 2.0-liter race engine took two and a half years and more than 1,000 hours of dynamometer testing to complete. It’s designed to last a full season, so around 3,720 miles (6,000 kilometers), and comes with a “push-to-pass” feature that offers a temporary 30-hp (22-kW) boost allowing drivers to easily overtake.

Audi’s new engine will make its race debut on May 4th, 2019, at the Hockenheimring underhood of the Audi RS 5 DTM race car. Last year, the same RS 5 DTM used a naturally aspirated engine twice the size – a 4.0-liter V8 – yet produced just 500 hp (372 kW).

“Our drivers were totally thrilled right in the first test,” Head of Audi Motorsport Dieter Gass says. “However, the move from the naturally aspirated V8 to the turbo engine is not only important due to the additional output of some 100 horsepower. In the DTM, we’re now driving with a high-efficiency engine of the type we’re also using in many production vehicles of the Group.”

A key advantage of the new four-cylinder is its lightness. The new unit tips the scales at 187 pounds (85 kilograms) – half the weight of the outgoing V8. As a result, the Audi RS 5 DTM now weighs just over 2,200 pounds (1,000 kilograms), making the power to weight ratio about 3.5 pounds per horsepower (1.6 kilograms per horsepower) – that’s Bugatti Veyron SS territory.

We’re sure all you readers have one question in mind: will this engine make its way to a road car? Unlikely. Audi offered a limited A5 DTM Edition in 2016, and it didn’t have the same 4.0-liter V8 as the race version. The most-powerful engine offered on that road-going special edition was a 3.0-liter six-cylinder with 270 hp (201 kW).

The beginning of a new era in the DTM: Starting in the 2019 season, the Class 1 race cars of the popular touring car racing series will use modern and highly efficient turbo engines. The two-liter four-cylinder power-plant of the Audi RS 5 DTM delivers more than 610 horsepower. By means of the “push-to-pass” function, the drivers can even access a short-term 30-hp power boost.

New Lister Jaguar F-Type Droptop Beast Revealed

The 666-hp car is the company’s most powerful convertible.

After the launch of its LFT-666 dubbed the “beast”, Lister got many calls asking for an open-topped version of its Jaguar F-Type turned up to 11.

Thankfully, Lister is one of those companies that listens to its customers, so it broke out the angle grinders and created this – the LFT-C.

The LFT-C is the British company’s most powerful open-top car ever, and arrived just as the storms have relented and the sun has come out.

Power comes from a 666-hp V8 engine, which rockets this beastly machine to 62 mph (100 kph) in just over three seconds and onto a top speed of over 205 mph (330 kph).

Each model will have a unique carbon fiber front bumper, front splitter, rear diffuser, rear lip spoiler, and extended rear wheel arches, and will also have to same lightweight alloy wheels, exhaust, suspension, and braking system as featured on the hard-top LFT-666. It will also have a bespoke hand-stitched interior

Each car will be hand finished to each customer’s own specification, right down to the wheel design, paint finish, and interior trim, with the finest U.K. Nappa hides from Bridge of Weir leather on offer.

Only 10 examples will be offered, each featuring a numbered solid silver plaque on the engine cover signifying its rarity. It’s considerably fewer than the hard-top LFT-666, of which 99 were built.

“Launching the new LFT-C is a personal triumph, as I have always loved convertible cars, even since my 2nd car, an MG Midget,” said Lawrence Whittaker, CEO of The Lister Motor Company. “While we are famous for cars like the Knobbly and the Storm, the LFT series heralds a new era for Lister and continues our historical enhancement of Jaguar drive trains, which dates back to 1957.

“In 2019, we will see the launch of at least two new cars and have also just opened our new £5m headquarters in Lancashire that will be known as the home of the new Lister. There is lots more to come, and we look forward to sharing more news in the near future.”

Cadillac CT4 Confirmed For 2019 Reveal

Cadillac wants to save the sedan. Thank you for that, Caddy!

Cadillac took us by surprise earlier this week by revealing the all-new CT5 sedan. The stylish replacement of the CTS will make its public premiere during next month’s New York Auto Show and will go on sale before the year’s end. This won’t be the only new sedan that Cadillac will introduce in 2019 as it has been confirmed the CT4 will arrive in the next eight month as well.

There’s no official announcement from the manufacturer yet but its president, Steve Carlisle, has told Automotive News the CT4 will debut later in 2019 without giving more details. Obviously, it will slot below the CT6 and CT5, and will act as a replacement of the discontinued ATS.

“Boring sedans are dead,” Andrew Smith, Cadillac executive director of global design, commented to Automotive News. “I think awesome sedans are going to be around for a while.” He also confirmed Cadillac will try to offer customers “driver’s car” as an alternative to the booming SUV and crossover segments.

Spy photos of the CT4 have already revealed the model will follow the design formula of the recently unveiled CT5, which means the angular, boxy shapes of the previous generation sedans from Cadillac will be replaced by flowing and more harmonic lines. Under the skin should be an RWD platform with optional all-wheel drive.

No other tech details are known at the moment, but we believe General Motors’ 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine will find its way under the hood of the compact sedan. Also, Cadillac has already promised all its future models will feature the company’s Super Cruise autonomous driving tech so it’s probably safe to assume it’s going to be available in the CT4.

Despite the continuously increasing demand for SUVs and crossovers, Cadillac made a significant investment into its manufacturing plant in Lansing, Michigan to produce the CT4 and CT5.

Hyundai N Roadster Rendered As Miata-Fighting Sports Car

It looks great, but don’t expect to see one in showrooms.

Hyundai doesn’t currently offer a roadster, but designer Yeonjoon Park imagines what a sporty droptop from the brand’s N performance division might look like. His vehicle blends styling elements from a variety of other machines to create a little sports car that we’d love to see in real life.

Up front, the N Roadster’s front fascia seems to come straight from the Veloster but larger intakes in the corners. Ducts behind the front wheels would likely pull cool air past the brakes to keep them cool while driving hard. The long, fairly flat hood is reminiscent of the Audi TT, especially in combination with the hexagonal grille here that’s similar in shape to the one on the Four Rings’ machine.

Yeonjoon Park gives his N Roadster an hourglass shape that comes inward at the passenger compartment and becomes wider again at the fenders on both ends.

The renders show the N Roadster with a hard roof. This setup would offer better comfort when the weather gets chilly at the expense of adding weight and complexity to the machine. A better compromise might be a lightweight, manual soft top with the option of installing the rigid, fixed piece whenever the owner thinks its necessary.

From the rear three-quarters perspective, the sculpting lends a slight resemblance to the Fiat 124 Spider. The short deck is a classic element for a sports car. The small wing is a sporty touch, although the design might look cleaner without it.

Unfortunately, there’s absolutely no indication that Hyundai intends to enter the roadster market. In fact, the prospect seems rather unlikely given that the entry-level sports car market is currently weak in most of the world. Instead, the N division wants to enter more popular segments like with the sporty Tucson that’s allegedly on the way.
